The guidelines for my clinic say that if you are my age (36) and have a 3 day transfer they will transfer 2 embryos max, but if you're a day 5 you have the option of choosing to transfer up to 3 embryos. None of this was an issue for me because I only made 1 embryo but if I had to read something into it I would think that means that day 3 has a higher chance of success (hence the emphasis on fewer embys). But it could just mean that day 5 has a lesser chance of multiples...

I believe the 5 day transfer is more likely to be successful. I had a though time when my doc informed me that out of the 6 eggs retrieved only 1 fertilized. The Dr. told me there could be a chance that our one and only might not develop after thaw out. I was devastated, heart broken. Soon after that I got a call from my reg OBGYN telling me my pap had abnormal cells and need to do biopsy. I also got a call from a surgeon who preformed a DNC to stabilize and active bleed from my uterus in March telling me the biopsy of my uterus showed complex hyperplasia. So I had two biopsies done within a couple weeks apart. My hubby and I decided to take a break from all the new stress and not do the transfer at the following month.

My docs all decided my uterus, and cervix needed time to heal before we put my body through more stress. A few months later we prepared for the transfer, my doc decided to wait a couple more days 5 day transfer. I was told I needed bed rest for the next 2 days but we decided to rest for 5. I went in on Monday the 9th of Nov and I was told I am pregnant. I had more blood work this morning I'm waiting for a call back from the doctor.

I don't know that our success would have been the same if we'd had a 3 day transfer. From what I've read on the fifth day of development the blastocyst is ready to implant onto the uterus. It in a natural pregnancy the blast floats down to the uterus' sticky surface. During implantation the outer cells of the blast fuse with the cells of uterus. Perhaps this is exactly why this is a more successful wait time.

Depends on the doc. My last IVF round my doc did a day transfer. He typically does a day 3 in the event the eggs don't make to day 5 (blast) so at least the day transfer has had a chance. From my research day 5 (eggs that have made it to blast) are more successful. I'm currently on my 2nd IVF round and had my retrieval on Wednesday. I am hoping for a day 5 retrieval.
